There’s a lot of change on the horizon in the world of housebuilding and construction.
With the Future Homes Standard (FHS), evolving building regulations and the need to stay compliant,
are housebuilders forgetting the need to promote sustainability?
SUSTAINABILITY IS ACHIEVABLE
Thankfully it seems as though housebuilders are committed to sustainability. While the ‘sustainability’ buzzword may have
taken a back seat while housebuilders adapted to the challenges presented by changing building regulations, it would
appear many are still very much ahead of the curve.
We know that the easiest way to achieve net zero is to swap our energy sources to renewables. Removing gas and
electrifying buildings from renewable sources is the first step towards this and everything else will soon click into place.
The reduction of carbon emissions is also a commitment housebuilders are taking seriously, making us, as suppliers,
consider our responsibility to be as green as possible while educating the industry in the skills and knowledge needed to
deliver a sustainable future – The Supply Chain Sustainability School is a great example of how we’re starting to do that
as an industry.
Here at GL, we are proud to have recently been awarded a gold membership status of the
School, representing our commitment to learn more and work with the UK house builder to
deliver this important objective.

GL has started the process of measuring the embodied carbon within our product
range using Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs).
An LCA – also known as a Life Cycle Analysis – is a methodology for assessing environmental impacts
associated with all stages of the life cycle of a commercial product, process or service. For instance, in
the case of a manufactured product, environmental impacts are assessed from raw material extraction
and processing (cradle), through the product’s manufacture, distribution and use, to the recycling or final
disposal of the materials (grave). By completing this assessment, we as suppliers can give the house
builder a clear picture of the embodied carbon of each of our products.
